Dielectric wire Modern radio technology starts employing higher frequencies. Ultra-high frequency is used in television. They correspond to meter long waves. Such waves are too long for radio detection since it employs centimeter waves. Even shorter waves (just several mm) are also employed. Microwave frequency has some peculiarities, different from high and ultra-high ones. One of its amazing properties is the following: the energy of centimeter waves can be transferred via line made of insulating material -- dielectric. It one makes wave conductor as a dielectric core that has low losses and high dielectric capacitivity, then electromagnetic energy will spread along such wave conductor as if it was made of a metal pipe. Such dielectric wave conductors with 1-3 cm long waves are sometimes even more advantageous and convenient than metal ones. Now we are not surprised to know that you can employ dielectric (not metal) antenna for centimeter waves. Such antenna is a small dielectric core thickened on one side and tapering on the other side. Electrical power is delivered to the antenna on its thick side. Such antenna will have good directional effect from a thick to a thin side. Properties of microwave frequency make you abandon old-fashioned ideas and concepts.
